- Summary
- When dashing Irish sea captain and part-time gunrunner Rian Farrell spontaneously buys the deed to a claim at Ballarat, where reef gold has recently been discovered underground, his wife Kitty is dismayed. Not only is mining dangerous work for the crew, who are seamen rather than labourers, but the desolate goldfields are no place for their adopted fourteen-year-old daughter Amber. As the headstrong and passionate Kitty endeavours to embrace the challenge by opening a bakery and building a small community of friends, she still yearns for life on the sea. But disaster strikes when the Yarrowee River bursts its banks and Rian disappears in the flood. Believing herself widowed, Kitty's heart is left in tatters. Alone and grieving, she turns to Rian's long-time shipmate Daniel, who has loved her from afar for many years
