Summary
1940. Tucked on the edge of the Lake District lies Mary Vale, a Mother and Baby Home open to unmarried women. Amongst the residents, three very different mums-to-be are brought together in friendship. Shipyard welder Gracie Price, pregnant by a married man, is angry at her own foolishness. The father of WAAF Diana Bishop's unborn baby had been eager to marry her by special licence, but now he's missing in action. Widowed Zelda Fischer has travelled miles to reach the sanctuary of the home - although she is a Jewish refugee, the other residents resent the presence of a German in their midst. Meanwhile, Ward Sister Ada Dale is growing close to the new doctor, Jamie Reid..
