Summary
June 2014: Macer Gifford watches in horror as brutal images of ISIS-inflicted murder, rape and torture flood his computer screen. It's not enough for him to simply ask why more isn't being done: he must act. Despite no previous military training he leaves his job, his loving girlfriend and his family to illegally cross the border into Syria and join the Kurdish YPG in their fight against the savagery of ISIS. Over the next three years Macer fights alongside the ill-equipped but battle-hardened Kurds and their Syrian allies to become one of the longest surviving British International Volunteers, and one of the only few to be promoted to a Commander in the YPG. Along the way he encounters fierce firefights, lethal snipers and suicide bombers, and a motley but remarkable band of foreign volunteers who valiantly stand shoulder to shoulder in the fight against evil
