Summary
In April 2012, on a remote rural property in northern NSW named the School of Happiness, police shot dead Ryan Pringle. Ryan, who was high on a cocktail of drugs and who suffered from mental illness, had been threatening attendees of a hippie festival, known as a rainbow gathering, with a crossbow and hunting knife. When a husband-and-wife police team arrived, they tried to disable him with a taser gun, but ultimately fatal shots were fired. In Wild Man, Alecia Simmonds follows the coronial inquest into this police shooting of Ryan Pringle the 'Wild Man'. She reveals what really happened that night and unravels the web of issues entangled in the episode: a cultural clash between hippies and rednecks, drug use, mental health and overstretched police services. This audiobook examines this fascinating, tragic and, at times, bizarre case, and is also a clear-eyed look at some of the most pressing issues in contemporary society
