Summary
The story is set in Pakistan, the land of Malala Yousafzai. There are many Malalas, in different forms, struggling to get education and to improve their lives. This story is a tribute to all such girls. The protagonist of this book, Jameela, living in a village, envies the children next door, who have come to spend the winter vacation in the fresh countryside. The girl appears to be about her age, twelve years old. She has everything that Jameela does not have. Nice clothes, books, and above all, a loving father. She wistfully watches as the girl is pampered by her father. Soon thereafter, Jameela<U+0146>s mother decides to arrange Jameela<U+0146>s marriage. Jameela has no idea who she is getting married to. She looks forward to her wedding as she expects to be dressed up in beautiful clothes, but is disappointed when her wedding does not look or feel like a happy occasion. She does not get to wear new clothes. Her mother is crying and there are no guests or festivities. She is transported to a fancy house in a city, far away from the village, the only world she has ever known. To her surprise she discovers that this is the house of the same girl that she envied. Slowly, reality sinks in. The girl<U+0146>s father is Jameela<U+0146>s husbsame girl that she envied. Slowly, reality sinks in. The girl<U+0146>s father is Jameela<U+0146>s husband, and Jameela, at twelve years, is his second wife and a stepmother. Jameela has to survive in a house, which she shares with her co-wife, her moody husband and the unruly stepchildren. Concurrent with her personal struggle, a whole nation struggles for independence and a new country, Pakistan, is created on the map. This story is about the triumph of the human spirit if one has the will to conquer adversities, both at an individual and a national level
