- Summary
- Adultery is not a typical theme of Jane Austen's, but when it disturbs the well-ordered peace and tranquility of Mansfield Park, it has quite unexpected effects, as it causes the diffident and much put-upon heroine Fanny Price to struggle to cope with the results, re-examining her own feelings while enduring the cheerful amorality, old-fashioned indifference and priggish disapproval of those around her. Fanny's adopted father, the rich Sir Thomas Bertam of Mansfield Park, represents the enduring, classical values of the eighteenth century, Fanny herself represents the beginnings of nineteenth century social conscience and morality while the moral ambiguities of the fascinating Mary Crawford are in stark contrast to Fanny's ideals and epitomise the superficiality of Regency England
