Summary
The names of Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills are forever linked in what has been called 'the single most outstanding disaster in the history of Australian exploration'. So how can Wills's account of the expedition be called A Successful Exploration Through the Interior of Australia? Wills has been described as the expedition's 'real hero'. Without his diary we would have almost no contemporary record of this first European crossing of the continent from south to north, when three men died, leaving only one survivor, John King. Carefully edited by his loving father, the diary with its meticulous observations reveals much about the country traversed, and about Wills himself. The writing of both son and father is often vivid, and the bungling, even deceit, which contributed to the final debacle clearly emerges, as does the kindness of the Aboriginal tribe which kept the explorers alive as long as possible
